An Unpaid Board Bill:

There came to the town in this year (1861), Mrs. Mary M. McDowell,
later Mrs. Stiles. She build the Union Hotel, the second hostelry in the
town, the Adams House being the first. Her place stood where Cooper's
blacksmith shop is now located. She ran the hotel until 1866. In
1862-1864 she boarded soldiers for the United States Government, this
being a recruiting station. Her bill amounted to thirty-five hundred
dollars and is still due. The vouchers were in the possession of Colonel
McDermitt, and were lost when he was killed by the Indians in 1865. Mrs.
Stiles died in 1891. By the way, Mr. Stiles was with Admiral Sloat, and
took part in the raising of the flag at Monterey when California was
taken over in the name of the United States.

 BENJAMIN JOHNS

MARRIAGE: Early Marriages of Hendricks Co., IN; 1824-1841; ; ; San Jose
Family History Center Film #6117 Item 11.

Time of death is presumed to be late 1839 or early 1840 since Mary is a widow with a newborn son in the 1840 census, taken in late spring. Family moved to Buchanan Co., MO in 1838 or 1839.

RUEL LOTHROP

Center, Pamphlet 747; NOTE: marriage to Ruel Lothrop.

!DEATH: "The Passing of John Lothrop", Yerington Times; April 14, 1920;
Yerington, NV; Number 16; NOTE: Obituary of his son John states Ruel died 11 Jun 1852 of cholera on the plains.

CONFLICT: Examination of records of various descendant families of John and Lucinda Fowler show a conflict in the year that the family moved to California. Mary Malinda's descendants claim it was in 1852 but Welcome's descendants and Samuel's book claim it was in 1854. We know that Welcome sold property in Atchison Co. MO in February 1854 without a power of attorney given to someone else which is an indication that it was 1854, not 1852. According I have adjusted the date of Ruel's death from 1852 as the obituary of his son John claims to 1854 to match the date in Samuel's book.
